Tension over Mets-Cards HBPs empties benches

1 min read

Rising tensions between the Mets and Cardinals culminated with the benches and bullpens clearing amid a fracas during Wednesday’s series finale at Busch Stadium.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Mets’ Yoan López threw a pitch up and in to Cards slugger Nolan Arenado that sparked outrage from Arenado, who shouted back to the mound as both benches emptied. Arenado and Cardinals first-base coach Stubby Clapp were ejected.

It has been a series of frustration for the Mets, who despite their MLB-best 14-5 record entering Wednesday have been on the wrong end of a Major League-high 19 hit batsmen. J.D. Davis’ HBP a half-inning before the benches cleared was the sixth of the series against the Mets.

Star slugger Pete Alonso was beaned in Tuesday night’s Mets win and was forced to undergo concussion protocols after the game, but he was well enough to play on Wednesday.

Davis exited Wednesday’s game after his plunking, which struck him on the left foot.
