A medium-rare feat? Burger homers on National Burger Day

CHICAGO — Jake Burger had homered prior to the fifth inning of Saturday night’s contest between his White Sox and the Cubs at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Four times, to be exact, over 129 career plate appearances. But he had never gone deep on National Hamburger Day, which is a box he can now check on his overall list of accomplishments.

Burger connected off Cubs starter Keegan Thompson for a 424-foot drive featuring a 106.3 mph exit velocity, per Statcast. Cue the cheesy headlines to follow based on that rare last name.

“Honestly, probably there are some clips from 2014 in the St. Louis media that they are having some sort of fun,” said Burger during a recent interview, referencing word play involving his name dating back to collegiate days for Missouri State. “I like the Smash Burger, though. That’s always fun. Burger Bomb. Those are the two favorites.”
