Psychic Cease? Mic'd up righty predicts HR

CHICAGO — Dylan Cease has been one of the top starting pitchers in Major League Baseball through the first five weeks of the 2022 regular season, posting a 3-1 record with a 2.48 ERA and 39 strikeouts over 29 innings pitched.

But based on his psychic prowess shown off while mic’d up for Tuesday’s 3-1 victory over the Cubs at Wrigley Field, the right-handed hurler probably already viewed that success on its way.

Cease and Lucas Giolito were talking in the White Sox dugout prior to Tim Anderson’s leadoff at-bat in the third inning against the Cubs’ Keegan Thompson. Cease asked Giolito for a prediction with Anderson’s at-bat, and Giolito went with a base hit to right field.

That guess was countered by Cease: “Home run over the Sloan [sign] in right field.”

Giolito strongly doubted such a prediction, with a game-time temperature of 45 degrees, a 23 mph wind and a constant rain falling.

Anderson’s at-bat gave credence to never doubt Cease’s psychic powers.

“Half a second later, bang. Home run over the Sloan sign,” said a smiling Cease while recounting Anderson’s first-pitch blast during Wednesday’s pregame. “It just came out. I don’t know. Just very lucky. It was pretty unreal.”

The Cease commentary put forth by the White Sox on their Twitter account had a few other humorous moments. Cease joked about out of all the people who could be picked to be mic’d up, “They pick the guy who says like 20 words.”

With the wintry conditions, Cease hoped fans could hear his audio over “my teeth chattering.” He then broke into song with “I can’t feel my face in this weather, and I hate it.”

All this comedy couldn’t compare with what Cease termed the most legendary mic’d up moment ever.

“I die a legend now, that’s all I can say,” said Cease during his mic’d up session. “We are just out here predicting the future, no big deal.”

As for future predictions for himself and the team, Cease was staying mum on Wednesday.

“No, I have to save them. We have to save the magic,” Cease said. “It was a funny little thing for sure.”
