Yankees get Montas, Trivino from A's (source)

1 min read

The Yankees made another big splash ahead of the Trade Deadline, acquiring starter Frankie Montas and reliever Lou Trivino from the Athletics, a source told’s Mark Feinsand on Monday. The clubs have not confirmed the news.

The A’s return included a quartet of Yankees top prospects: left-handers Ken Waldichuk (New York’s No. 5 prospect/No. 70 overall) and JP Sears (No. 20), right-hander Luis Medina (No. 10) and second baseman Cooper Bowman (No. 21), according to Feinsand.

With Luis Castillo traded to the Mariners on Saturday, Montas, 29, was the best remaining starting pitcher on the trade market and will provide a major boost to the Yankees’ rotation. Though he has been battling shoulder injuries this season, Montas has been sharp for the A’s, posting a 3.18 ERA with 109 strikeouts in 104 2/3 innings.

The right-hander has a career 3.73 ERA over seven seasons and finished sixth in AL Cy Young voting last year after going 13-9 with a 3.37 ERA and 207 strikeouts in 187 innings.

Trivino is the second addition to the Yankees’ bullpen of the afternoon, after the Bombers traded for right-hander Scott Effross earlier on Monday. Trivino, 30, has a 6.47 ERA with 10 saves in 32 innings this year, though he had a 3.70 ERA from 2018-21, all for Oakland. The right-hander had 22 saves last season.

Montas is under club control through 2023, while Trivino will be under club control through 2024.
